Could you be the Institute’s next professional practice champion?

Chris Baker, the Chartered IIA's technical manager retires in November. His contribution has been immense and we are looking for a Chief Professional Practice Adviser to build on his invaluable work.

We think this role should appeal to a highly experienced, IIA qualified practitioner who is keen to make a major technical contribution to their profession and is attracted by the opportunity to support our work to engage with important external audiences, which include, Regulators and audit committees as well as those within the profession.

Simply put, this individual will be our hub of knowledge on matters concerning the practice of internal audit, and the champion for how it is applied across the Institute: in the guidance we produce; by advising on our growing External Quality Assessment programme; in providing expert technical support to members; on the technical aspects of our responses to Government consultations, in the policy reports we write, through liaison with various global IIA staff, as well as by contributing to technical themes for our members’ magazine, Audit and Risk.

Internal audit is a dynamic profession. It has to be. The rising expectations of consumers are strongly influencing the way executives and boards maintain control over their organisations. There is no doubt too that the profile of our profession is rising as regulators and organisations see the value that an effective Internal Audit function adds in supporting them.

The Institute is playing an increasing important role in setting expectations of the profession and supporting practitioners to meet them. It does this in a number of ways. For example: through the creation of evidence based research which demonstrates how the profession supports organisations to meet the challenges of the modern economy; and the development of guidance and training to support practitioners to meet ever rising demands on them.

The Institute's higher profile and growing membership demands strong technical skills at its heart to ensure that everything it does is technically sound, reflects best practice, absorbs and innovates ideas and techniques and diffuses them across the profession.

Our new recruit will have a challenging and exciting role. They will need in depth experience as a practitioner, the credibility, stature and influence to make a big impression on the next phase of the Institute's journey, helping us challenge and support practitioners to achieve greater heights. It’s about listening, observing and forming insights. Then using this to guide and nurture the Institute's technical capabilities so that it is not only focused on the right technical issues here and now, but spotting the trends that allow it to be ahead of the curve in its thinking about how the profession is practiced.

As well as the technical challenge, working within the Institute can give individuals an invaluable perspective on how external audiences perceive our function.

The role could, therefore, appeal to some who have never contemplated working within a professional body. Think about it now!
