He has more than 25 years’ experience in internal audit and finance, including two decades as a head of internal audit.

As IIA Global’s chairman for 2012-13, Tarling will be its chief spokesman. He will lead the institute’s global strategic initiatives and advocate both its advancement and that of the internal audit profession worldwide.

Tarling’s chosen theme for his chairmanship, “Say it right”, illustrates how important he believes that effective communication is to the internal auditor’s job. In an online video, he says the ability to communicate in a clear, targeted and meaningful way to all stakeholders is essential if internal auditors are to have a seat at the table.

Careers advice

Moving up

Every secondment counts

The inbetweeners

Historically a stopgap for internal auditors searching for a more permanent role, interim management is now more likely to be the consequence of a positive and actively chosen career path. Why has it become such a growth area? Barclay Simpson's Andy Whyte explains.

Training & Development

Challenging conversations are habit-forming

“Any challenging conversation needs to be handled with care because people need to be handled with care. Forget this at your peril,” says Adrian Thompson, chief internal auditor, Norfolk County Council.
